Bodegas de Santo Tomás

March 16th is our next Monday Night Dinner and features four wines from Bodegas de Santo Tomás in the Valle de Santo Tomás, a two hour drive south of the border in Baja. Founded in 1888, the winery is the oldest continually producing winery in Baja and stands on the site of the old Misión de Santo Tomás where grapes (primarily "mision" grapes--related to criollo) were first planted in the 1790s. After the departure of the friars, successive owners introduced new European varietals and the Bodegas de Santo Tomás now produce a large variety of wines made from grapes such as Barbera, Colombard, Pinot Noir, Tempranillo, Chardonnay and Nebbiolo. From it's first bottlings in 1939 to the hiring of cult-icon and winemaker, Hugo d'Acosta, in 1989, the winery has established itself as one of the premier wineries in Mexico. Today, wine-making is headed by enologist, Laura Zamora, whose wines we will be drinking next Monday.
